Instructions for Installing Chime

Any Macintosh or Windows computer that is powerful enough to use Netscape Navigator on the Internet can be used to view our Chime exercises and other computer resources on our course web site. The software is all free.

You must first be connected to the WWW through a modem and an internet service provider. For a browser we recommend:

Netscape Navigator 4.05 or higher or 4.5

If you donít have a browser, use the Netscape link on the Chem30B home page to go to the Netscape site where you can download the correct version of the browser. The download can take 30 min or more. It's better to install Netscape from a CD-ROM.

If you already have Internet Explorer on your computer it will probably work fine, but our software has mainly been tested on Netscape.

Use the Chime link on the Chem 30B home page to go to MDLI, the company that developed and distributes Chime. Download the Chime 2.0 plug-in for Windows or Mac.

When asked where you want to save the downloaded file, choose your desktop so that you can find it easily. Also, write down the name of this file. This download takes up to 10 min.

The file that you have just downloaded contains the Chime plug-in and an Installer program. Find this file -- it should be on your desktop! Double click on the icon and the Installer program will start. Follow the on-screen instructions. During installation, you may have to locate the Plug-ins folder which is in the same folder with Netscape Communicator/Navigator.

Once the plug-in is installed, restart Netscape & try the Chime Tutorial.
