Jmol
The Future of Molecular Graphics on the Internet
Jmol is a free, open source, molecular graphics program that runs as an applet in a webpage. It replaces a previous plug-in based program called Chime that was proprietary, and required very specific operating system and browser specifications. Jmol runs on most modern web browsers that support Java 1.4 and LiveConnect.

C4 has a rich history of working with Chime and we are now in the process of converting material, such as our exercises, to use Jmol. There is a growing Jmol community of users and developers that are committed to seeing that the functionality of Jmol is improved, and that it is incorperated into web based chemical content. It is primarly used as an educational tool, but with an extensive command language, and display features, it has the potential to be an important research tool as well. It is very clear that this project has a bright future.
Thymine
Currently C4 has several different projects that involve Jmol. These include an extensive set of web based exercises, a set of 404 models carefully choosen for classroom use, and a web based viewer for easily finding and displaying models. We are currently looking into how we can use Jmol to display molecular orbital calculations using WebMO.
